Global knowledge process outsourcing provider Syntel reported a drop in fourth quarter profit that sent that company's shares down. The profit drop was attributable to higher cost of sales and increased overhead, even though earnings beat analyst estimates. Although revenue also jumped 27% in the quarter, it still came in shy of expectations. Shares were hurt by a weak earning forecast, as the company expected their earnings for fiscal year 2011 to fall short of Street projections.
The CEO Prashant Ranade said that during the year the company expanded it's global workforce by 38% and its capacity by 9,000 seats. He expected demand for Syntel services to remain healthy in 2011. The company, which is based in Troy, Michigan, saw gross margin decline to 38.4% from 50.2% a year earlier.

In recent years companies have been outsourcing call-center operations to India as well as other overseas locations, and some companies have even moved call-centers to prisons within the United States. Perhaps then it was only a matter of time before someone attempted to combine the two.
Specifically, there is a new scheme to do just that at the Cherlapalli high-security prison on the outskirts of Hyderabad , India, that is still in the early stages of planning. Apparently there are many computer literate and professional prisoners at this facility that could be utilized in call-center work. The prison must first overcome current Indian regulations that do not allow Internet or phone access for prisoners, but despite this the organizers appear confident that the idea can work. They have already hired a software specialist to lay the groundwork.
